This block can handle up to 5/16" steel cable. The 3" in the description relates to the diameter of the pulley, not the cable size. I had to use a small chain to attach block, since hook would not fit around steel pipe. I used a 3/8" diamond braid rope rated at 244 LBS and a 3/16" vinyl-coated galvanized aircraft cable rated at 850 LBS.
